Your website represents your business online, and your homepage is much like a welcome mat, greeting people when they first enter. You want them to stay and not turn away because they’re put off by something. Much of this has to do with your website’s design, the user’s experience of your site and, of course, what your website has to say. If you want a converting website, you need to take the right steps.

Simplicity is an art form. Steve Jobs noted that “Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.” We get that building a website is exciting, you want to promote your business and show off all the things that you can do. But TOO much, TOO soon, can be TOO overwhelming for a website visitor and send them looking elsewhere.
Think about the simplicity of Google’s user interface; it’s a single box that you type a question into. It’s not complicated. It knows what it intends to do – which is to answer a question for you. Don’t reserve this vital information for just your contact page. Most people take to the web to find phone numbers or scope out an address on the go. So this information should appear either in the header or footer of your site so people can easily contact you. The more steps they have to go through to find your vitals, the more likely they’ll just give up and head elsewhere.
It’s important to Google and it should be important to you if you want to appear in mobile search listings. With people gravitating to their phones to search for things on the go, having a mobile-friendly site is imperative. 80% of mobile searches happened even with a computer available according to a study by Nielsen and Google Canada. So do make sure your website is optimized for mobile devices.
You want your content to read well and for your visitor’s eyes to feel comfortable on your site. The fonts and colours you use should be easy on the eyes, they shouldn’t cause a user to have to squint to read what you’re saying.
Also, it’s daunting to see a big block of text when you visit a website. You want to see something that your eyes can easily “scan” through – not something that looks like a medical journal or research paper. Studies using eye-tracking research have found that on average only 28% of the words on a webpage are actually read. People scan, they don’t read.

We are drawn to beauty; we can’t look away from it. Because our brains process visual information 60,000 faster than text, you’ll want to ensure that your website’s images are gorgeous. 90% of the information transmitted to our brains comes through visuals which highlights the importance of having great photography and graphics on your website. Like getting ready for a party, you’re not going to show up in sweatpants with your hair looking like a nest. No, you’re going to put something on that compliments your skin tone and makes you look magnificent. Dress your website up in the same way using beautiful imagery that aids the design.
Have you ever left a store and abandoned a purchase because the checkout line was too long? We’re impatient beings, and this is magnified when we’re on the internet. We can’t even take the time to read web pages in full! Long contact forms with multiple fields of entry are scary, and they just feel long.
Again, think simplicity. Eliminating unnecessary form fields can significantly increase the conversion rate of your contact form. In a study conducted by HubSpot, they found by simply reducing the number of form fields in a contact form; conversion rates improved by nearly 50%. Think about what information you actually need from your customer and ask for only that.
